Microarray analysis of genes showing variable expression following a blood meal in Anopheles gambiae.

چکیده
A microarray analysis of 14 900 genes of the malaria vector mosquito, Anopheles gambiae, shows that as many as 33% (4924) of their corresponding transcription products vary in abundance within 24 h after a blood meal. Approximately half (2388) of these products increase in their accumulation and the remainder (2536) decrease. Expression dynamics of 80% of the genes analysed by expressed sequence tag (EST) projects reported previously are consistent with the observations from this microarray analysis. Furthermore, the microarray analysis is more sensitive in detecting variation in abundance of gene products expressed at low levels and is more sensitive overall in that a greater number of regulated genes are detected. Major changes in transcript abundance were seen in genes encoding proteins involved in digestion, oogenesis and locomotion. The microarray data and an electronic hyperlinked version of all tables are available to the research community at http://www.angagepuci.bio.uci.edu/1/.

Microarray and RNAi Analysis of P450s in Anopheles gambiae Male and Female Steroidogenic Tissues: CYP307A1 Is Required for Ecdysteroid Synthesis
In insects, the steroid hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) coordinates major developmental transitions. While the first and the final steps of 20E biosynthesis are characterized, the pathway from 7-dehydrocholesterol to 5β-ketodiol, commonly referred as the "black box", remains hypothetical and whether there are still unidentified enzymes is unknown. The black box would include some oxidative ste...
متن کاملA catalogue of Anopheles gambiae transcripts significantly more or less expressed following a blood meal.
The recent assembly of the Anopheles gambiae genome included the sequencing of ~80,000 EST from blood fed (BF) and non-blood fed (NBF) adult female mosquitoes to help find the exons and introns in the mosquito genome. These two EST libraries provided an insight into the differential gene expression resulting from the metabolically intense task of converting the massive blood meal into eggs. Pre...
متن کاملAnalysis of Two Novel Midgut-Specific Promoters Driving Transgene Expression in Anopheles stephensi Mosquitoes
BACKGROUND Tissue-specific promoters controlling the expression of transgenes in Anopheles mosquitoes represent a valuable tool both for studying the interaction between these malaria vectors and the Plasmodium parasites they transmit and for novel malaria control strategies based on developing Plasmodium-refractory mosquitoes by expressing anti-parasitic genes. With this aim we have studied th...
متن کاملChloroquine Mediated Modulation of Anopheles gambiae Gene Expression
BACKGROUND Plasmodium development in the mosquito is crucial for malaria transmission and depends on the parasite's interaction with a variety of cell types and specific mosquito factors that have both positive and negative effects on infection. Whereas the defensive response of the mosquito contributes to a decrease in parasite numbers during these stages, some components of the blood meal are...
متن کاملSebida: a database for the functional and evolutionary analysis of genes with sex-biased expression
UNLABELLED We describe Sebida, a database of genes with sex-biased expression. The database integrates results from multiple, independent microarray studies comparing male and female gene expression in Drosophila melanogaster, Drosophila simulans and Anopheles gambiae. Sebida uses standard nomenclature, which allows individual genes to be compared across different microarray platforms and to be...
